Copywriting

ball-93118_1920

Finding the exact words to tell a company’s story isn’t as easy as you may think and the copywriters who manage to do it successfully deserve a round of applause.

Visiting websites with bad copywriting can be cringeworthy as well as just plain boring!  Never-ending stories without a real ending, purpose statements, uninteresting paragraphs on product descriptions and yawning lists of statistics are a few other reasons you will ‘X’ out of a poorly-written website.

Website owners know that people who visit their sites want to see eye catching pages that grab their attention at the first glimpse.  The pages need to have captivating images and language to keep you wanting more from them. Unfortunately, only a handful of websites out there know how to effectively do this. Companies struggling with copywriting can learn a lot from intelligent copywriters. Below are a couple firms who deliver clever copywriting.

EAT 24 is known for their clever blog posts – I think their copy needs to be recognized too, as they are right on track with it.  Their homepage has these funny catchy phrase slider ads:

Do Dinner

Find Out

Funny copy which clearly describes their product.  If you think their smarts stop here, think again. It’s also on their job description tab, email subscription call-to-action and on their meta descriptions too.  They are doing everything in their power to make sure they are reaching all targeted areas.

You us

Eat24

HipChat takes more of an innovative approach to copywriting.  They wanted to provide companies and teams a chat service that was built for them and around them.  It is entertaining but still explains what their software does and how it will help you now and in the long run.  Love the banner on their home page:

hipchat

Those were good right? Now take a look at a few examples of bad copywriting. There are many companies out there that don’t know how to effectively write copy and they should really take notes from the ones above. Or get some training.

I found this site Blinkee and they offer blinking and glow in the dark products.  They have a black background and their wording is all in neon colors (to stand out). They’ve listed images to show their products and every picture is blinking and the images are too small. This site setup is very distracting and painful to look at with way too much going on. They need to focus on the selling aspect of their products more, not the flashing and blinking that their products do. With this setup I just want to hit the “X” button right away and close this site out.

Blinkee

I ran into this site Lingscars and just had to laugh at the whole set up. My eyes are criss crossed from the design they have going on here. Honestly, what were they thinking? They have flashing, blinking and moving images going on all over the page. The background has bright colors and in a paisley design. A crazy gimmick song plays when you first enter the page. Their purpose is to lease a car, but with all the other stuff they have going on, you totally miss the concept you’re too busy looking at the picture of him, odd ads and videos. So much for what they are actually trying to do, which is lease their cars, as I just want to remove this image from my mind!

lingscars

Bottom line, your copy shouldn’t take itself too seriously. To appeal to your customer, your web copy should be interesting while representing your brand in a witty or unique way.

Get your Mind Working for You

mind-767591_1280

When it’s time to get up and get moving for the day, it’s not just your body that needs to wake up, but your mind too. The mind is a crucial part of who we are. It’s super-powerful and has unlimited potential. It’s your portal to the future and when it’s on your side you can create and do anything you desire, just by tapping into how it was designed to work.

By keeping your mind sharp and fresh it will improve your attitude.  Provide you the proper means of figuring out a tough situation more effectively and make wiser choices.  Even with the keenest of minds, you can’t remember everything, so don’t beat yourself up when you forget something.  It happens to us all at one time or another!

Your mind loves to solve problems so give it a positive problem to solve.  By asking it to seek out memories from your past where you felt really loved you will shift your filter from fear to love which has the added benefit of bringing the emotions back to life in your body.  Taking this first step will help you gain control of your mind so you can turn your life around.

Make the change today and start getting your mind working for you.  Bring those dreams you have to life, make them happen.  When you’re in control you have the power.  If you don’t control your mind, it will toddle off on its own path and as you know, nothing good can come from that.  As George Bernard Shaw says, “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

If you’ve lost a grasp on where you want your life or business to be heading, and you’re worried you’re falling deeper into the hole, don’t fret – I can help you refocus and get back some control. There’s no need to lose out on your dreams and the life you want to live.

This is the last month I’ll be offering you this deal on my One-on-One Coaching.  I will show you how to regain your confidence and live the life you were born to lead.  Places always fill up quickly so book now to save your spot!

With Love,

Andrea Sig

Why Resisting Change Makes It Painful

We each have up to 50,000 thoughts every day and – perhaps more surprisingly – 98% of those are the same thoughts we had yesterday. We tend to resist the thought of change and that’s why it seems so difficult. Whether we fear what it will mean and what impact it will have on our neatly ordered lives, our first thought is usually to RUN away from it, far, far away.

Yet change is a crucial part of achieving your goals. If you lack the ability to adapt and grow, you’re hurting yourself.  When you’re not challenging your brain enough, you can involuntarily cause negative unconscious thoughts. Don’t get me wrong – change can sometimes be painful or at the very least uncomfortable. When I faced bankruptcy and homelessness in my early 30s it certainly wasn’t a state I relished. And of course sometimes circumstances are thrust upon us and we just have to do our best. But with the benefit of hindsight, I’d needed to alter my course for some time and when I lost everything it gave me a chance to rethink my future. We ended up living in a castle, swanning about like millionaires so it can’t have been all bad! The lesson learned here was that eventually when the avoidance of change catches up with you and your comfort zone is no longer comfortable, the pain of NOT changing becomes greater than the pain of changing.

Accepting change can be done easily if you welcome it and take small steps every day. That way the brain can process what is happening at a reasonable rate without being overwhelmed so you’re less likely to back out and run from it. If your goal is to make a huge change, split it up into smaller chunks and then do those one at a time. Small success leads to more success.

You might fear change because of failures you’ve had in the past. That’s understandable but won’t move you forward. It’s time to CHANGE your old story and the way you think about ‘failure’ and turn it into a learning experience. I can help you do that. Know that everything happens for a reason, and one misstep doesn’t mean the dance is over. Like the saying goes “fall down nine times, stand up ten.”

There are times when you don’t even realize you need to change course or you aren’t convinced that change is what’s best. Look at it this way, the world changes constantly and it’s your choice whether or not to embrace and evolve with it. In my experience it’s often best to make the first move!

Changing your ‘story about how things are for you can enlighten your life in unimaginable ways. Doors will open that you may have thought were permanently closed and the experiences you will have and the valuable lessons you will learn will bring tremendous satisfaction to your mind and soul.

If you’re worried about change and need some valuable step-by-step advice on how to ease your vision or business into a new future, I’m here to help. For this month only I’m offering One-on-One Coaching that will show you the way to bring your brand back to life. Places are filling up fast so be quick 🙂

SMOG!

Summer is right around the corner and what better way to get in sync with the season then to cut away the SMOG! That’s right, SMOG; Should, Must, Ought to, Got to. Every time we use one of these words (internally or externally) we put tremendous pressure on ourselves or the person we’re talking to. These words can do more harm than good to our unconscious mind. Whenever we ‘should’ ourselves, we are making ourselves wrong. So instead of saying “I should have exercised more” you can make the change to “I’ve decided to exercise more today” which allows your brain to respond calmly and creatively.

Also, when using these words, what are we really saying? We are talking about things that we wish we were doing or we wish were happening, and not accepting reality. Those words are not encouraging enough to motivate anyone, so why continue down the path of “hopes” and “wishes” when you can easily shift down the path of “been there, done that” and “yes, I can”?

Understandably removing these words from our vocabulary can be difficult.  These are words we probably use every day. Here are some alternatives to help make the adjustment easier on your mind. Focus on the benefits! If there is something you think you should be doing more of or ought to be doing more of, remind yourself why you want to do this in the first place.  Accept reality. Once you do this you will realize you are capable of achieving your goals and will live a much happier life, without the SMOG.

Removing the SMOG from your vocabulary will take time and practice. Open up new possibilities with ‘can, could, choose to, am willing, have decided to (or not to), am considering’ and reap the rewards of a more empowered mindset.

Is SMOG fogging your business acumen? Do you feel like you’re losing potential custom to a newer more persuasive brand?  Is your message authentic and catchy enough? Learn how to harness the power of words to give it a BOOST with my one-on-one coaching!

Unconscious Mind

You’ve probably heard of the analogy where your unconscious mind is compared to an iceberg, with 90% of it submerged under the surface. The unconscious mind records everything you’ve ever thought or felt. So if it’s filled with destructive thoughts and feelings, your life could be the Titanic, just waiting to be sunk.  In the age of the Titanic though there were no helicopters that could lift you out of the wreckage. Today there is.

The brain is very powerful – you’d be surprised by how much control it has over us. Anyone who has ever felt anxious or depressed can confirm this. Unconscious thoughts that we’re not even aware of play a big role in our daily lives, impacting the choices that we make. Yet your unconscious mind has some interesting traits and by getting it to work with you instead of against you, you will be able to achieve much more out of life.

The unconscious mind will keep you on the straight and narrow path as long as you give it the right directions. In one of my previous blogs we discussed how the unconscious mind can’t process negatives like “don’t” or “can’t”. Negative thoughts come straight from your conscious mind and since you created it, you are the only one that can change it, and we all have the power to do so.

The power of positive thinking! Once you recognize there is a negative thought coming your way, acknowledge it and stop it in its tracks before it can affect your mood. Then replace it with a positive thought. If you keep up with this one simple task soon it will become habitual, and your unconscious mind will be able to relax and reprogram. Imagine that helicopter being full of positive thoughts, poised to save you from the destructive feelings that have been trying to drag you under.

You can achieve your goals. You can live the life you want. You can get exactly what you want, and it can be done in a less stressful and much happier way when the unconscious mind is on your side rooting for you!

DON’T Read This if You Want to Change

Did you know that the unconscious mind doesn’t recognize the word ‘don’t’? Every time you use it, your mind will skip it and go straight to the rest of your sentence. So when you say to your kids ‘Don’t run, you’ll fall over’, you’re actually giving them a command to run and fall, which makes it much more likely to happen. It might be more constructive to say ‘Run on the grass’ or ‘Watch where you’re going when you run.’ Think of the UK’s Drink Drive campaign ‘Don’t Drink and Drive.’ Surely it would make more sense to say ‘Stay Sober, Arrive Safe’?

Since your unconscious mind doesn’t process a negative, it’s important to be clear with the words you use, whether speaking to yourself or someone else. Instead of telling yourself what not to do, focus more on what to do. Think of new ways to phrase things by removing the negatives. I can’t think how many times I’ve been nervous in the past and repeatedly said to myself ‘Don’t mess this up’ then watched, horrified, as I did exactly that! If I’d known what I know now and concentrated instead on what I did want to happen, the result is likely to have been very different.

Making the transition to positive language and rephrasing how you speak to yourself and others will not only help your unconscious mind, but also your conscious mind! You’ll start thinking – and acting – more effectively. Where the head goes, your body follows.

There is no ‘Try’

How many of us are guilty of saying, “I’ll try?” I think we’ve all said this at one time or another. Now while the word ‘try’ is not completely negative like the words ‘no’ or ‘can’t’, saying you’ll try to do something is like setting yourself up for failure. You’re telling yourself that either you don’t believe in something or that you’re not committed to it. It’s a halfway attempt.

Trying gives you an easy way out. How far can you get if your mindset is to TRY to be successful? The great Yoda said it best, “Do or don’t. There is no try.” Don’t try to succeed, demand success! Don’t say you’re trying to be healthy, say I AM being healthy. Eliminating the word try from these statements has made them more like an affirmation – you’ve turned them into a positive and there’s no wiggle room for failure.

I demonstrate this with my coaching clients by asking them to try and pick up a book. They usually hesitate and then go ahead and pick up the book. When I shake my head they look confused. ‘I didn’t actually ask you to pick up the book, I asked you to try and pick up the book.’ Impossible isn’t it? Then the penny drops and they usually smile (or throw the book at me :)). I give them full permission to pull me up on ‘trying’ too, because it’s something I’m continually working on.

As small as this word may be, it is quite powerful. Removing it from your vocabulary will be like a breath of fresh air. You will be surprised how much more living you do in your life, when there is no other option then to just DO or NOT DO. This can work wonders in your professional and personal life, because we all have the innate power to attract anything we desire.

How Authentic Are Your Words?

Have you ever wondered what your words were really saying?  I know I’ve had my fair share of times when I’ve wondered how authentic I’m being.  Your words are power and they can change your world if you know how to connect with them. I learned how to surrender and the impossible suddenly became possible!  Ready to know what your words are saying?

It’s been a whirlwind of excitement around here!  I’m thrilled to share the video interview I did with Becky Walsh from Heal Your Life.  We talked about my video, ‘The Power of Words’ and how grace can be a part of our lives to bring things forward that we never thought possible; to open doors we thought were closed forever; and to embrace the best parts of human nature that we sometimes feel the need to hide.

We talked about recognizing the inner child within us all that carries around the burdens of society and the life events that hold us back and stop us from following our bliss.

In my book, Change Your Words, Change Your World, I’ll take you through how YOU can rewrite the path you’re on and change the script of your life.  There’s a power in your words that has yet to be tapped into and I can help you connect with the creative force of your words to evoke a rich, original and authentic life.

What does success mean to you?  What does a serene life mean to you?  Are you ready to Change Your Words to Change your World?

The moment I realized I was living by somebody else’s definition of success was such a huge eye opener.  I had what most consider a ‘successful career’ with all the bells and whistles yet I didn’t like who I was.  Thus begins the journey to discover my true, authentic self by following my heart, going within and listening to my own internal conversation; the words I had ignored or dismissed until then; the words I needed to hear.

After surrendering to grace and letting it carry me, change began to come forth through inspiration and goals that previously seemed out of reach were now reachable.  Taking the leap, surrendering to grace and embracing the raw power that fuels our words brings about the beautiful change in our worlds and lives.

What are your words saying?  Are your goals in reach?  Do you like who you are? Are you listening?  If you’ve answered ‘no’ to these questions, then it’s time for you to surrender!  Let me help you Change your Words so you can Change Your World!

All my Best!

Andrea

Is Self-Sabotage keeping you trapped and feeling unhappy?

Screen Shot 2014-09-22 at 12.54.36 PM

None of us live a “perfect” life. Life is not meant to be perfect; it has it’s extreme highs and the lowest lows all on its own. We don’t need any internal help. There are times, though, that we tell ourselves we aren’t good enough, there is no way WE can do THAT, it’s impossible, no way. Why would we do that to ourselves when we spend so much energy fighting off these same remarks from the world? Self-sabotage is something so many of us have become accustomed to that we’ve grown numb against the pain.

On your daily walks, meditations, or coaching sessions you should cleanse yourself from these internal self-sabotaging ideas. We are creations that can do so much good for the world that we need to push away the negative, harmful ideas away from us and spread only good, hope, love and kindness. That is not to say that these thoughts won’t creep in from time to time even with the most diligent practice, but the more you practice the easier it will be to look into your own reflection standing tall feeling powerful and in control of your life.

I have created a FREE Video Training on the 3 symptoms of Self-Sabotage that are keeping you trapped and unhappy. Come on over and sign up now and get your Video Training or schedule a FREE Strategy Session with me. Visit: http://www.andreagardner.co.uk/.

You deserve to be happy, healthy, and loved by you first and foremost. Let me help you along your journey to becoming the best possible you that you can become. You deserve it!

3 Realistic Steps to a Happy Ending

Some of the best stories are those that have never been told.

Example?

‘One day I’m going to…’ or ‘When I retire there’ll be enough time to…’

We all tell ourselves stories most of the time. They give us a handle on our world. One of my current favourites is: ‘When I’m fit enough I’ll be able to beat my husband at tennis.’ I’m recovering from an abdominal operation which makes walking to the end of the driveway a challenge. So even this sounds like an impossible dream right now. But it’s how I keep myself motivated to walk for 5 minutes extra every day.

And that’s a good thing while it remains an achievable goal which I’m gently committed to.

But what happens when the dream becomes pure fantasy and gets stored just out of reach on an inner shelf, alongside all the other dusty ‘if onlys’? It will soon start to take up valuable energy and taunt me into a vague sense of dissatisfaction.

The common thread that runs through these types of stories is the word ‘enough’. And it’s a word we tend to play fast and loose with. ‘When I get enough time, space, money, love, exercise…’ Whatever the commodity it feels like there’s not enough of it in the here and now.

And that’s sad. Because ‘enough’ is not a word that can ever be defined by a dictionary or even another person. It’s a quantity or quality that we need to determine ourselves.

Unless we change our relationship with the concept of enough we’ll keep pushing it out there ahead of us into never-never land.

So how do you rewrite the story you’re telling yourself and give it a happy ending?

I’ll be covering this topic in much more depth in a workshop I’ll be hosting at the Mind Body Spirit Festival in London’s Earl’s Court next Sunday, 25th May and I’d love to see you there. But if you can’t make it, here’s the summary:

1. Decide there is already enough of whatever it is you feel you’re lacking. You’re a child of the Universe! There will always be enough time, money, love and opportunity once you fully commit to something. But it will only ‘magically’ happen once you commit to it.

2. Take one step at a time. You’ve no doubt heard this before but breaking your happy ending into bite size chunks really helps avoid overwhelm. The steps can be as small as you like – remember you’re the storyteller.

When I was writing my first book, Change Your Words, Change Your World  I would imagine my first book signing in vivid detail. I’d tune into the excitement and energy around the event and picture queues of smiling people holding my book. Then I’d look backwards in time from that end point and ask my mind to describe all the necessary steps I’d taken to get there. Like finding an agent, a publisher, an editor. Writing a blurb. Creating an overall structure for the book and each chapter. And finally I would think about how many words I could realistically commit to writing every day. When you do this, start really small – even 100 words a day soon mounts up – because you can always scale up if you need to. The important thing is to make it easy on yourself.

3. Be your own best friend. Every time you hit a deadline/lifeline, throw a private party! Do a little victory dance in your living room. Give yourself a high five or a hug. Reward your genius with something that makes you happy. Appreciate and express thanks for all the ways in which you have – and are – enough. Within a very short time you’ll start to notice that the extra time, money, love and opportunities magically become available to you.

And that’s it. Three easy steps towards a happy ending. Thanks for staying with me and I hope it helps! As always I’d love to hear your stories…
