Get your Mind Working for You

When it’s time to get up and get moving for the day, it’s not just your body that needs to wake up, but your mind too. The mind is a crucial part of who we are. It’s super-powerful and has unlimited potential. It’s your portal to the future and when it’s on your side you can create and do anything you desire, just by tapping into how it was designed to work.

By keeping your mind sharp and fresh it will improve your attitude.  Provide you the proper means of figuring out a tough situation more effectively and make wiser choices.  Even with the keenest of minds, you can’t remember everything, so don’t beat yourself up when you forget something.  It happens to us all at one time or another!

Your mind loves to solve problems so give it a positive problem to solve.  By asking it to seek out memories from your past where you felt really loved you will shift your filter from fear to love which has the added benefit of bringing the emotions back to life in your body.  Taking this first step will help you gain control of your mind so you can turn your life around.

Make the change today and start getting your mind working for you.  Bring those dreams you have to life, make them happen.  When you’re in control you have the power.  If you don’t control your mind, it will toddle off on its own path and as you know, nothing good can come from that.  As George Bernard Shaw says, “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

SMOG!

Summer is right around the corner and what better way to get in sync with the season then to cut away the SMOG! That’s right, SMOG; Should, Must, Ought to, Got to. Every time we use one of these words (internally or externally) we put tremendous pressure on ourselves or the person we’re talking to. These words can do more harm than good to our unconscious mind. Whenever we ‘should’ ourselves, we are making ourselves wrong. So instead of saying “I should have exercised more” you can make the change to “I’ve decided to exercise more today” which allows your brain to respond calmly and creatively. 

Also, when using these words, what are we really saying? We are talking about things that we wish we were doing or we wish were happening, and not accepting reality. Those words are not encouraging enough to motivate anyone, so why continue down the path of “hopes” and “wishes” when you can easily shift down the path of “been there, done that” and “yes, I can”?

Understandably removing these words from our vocabulary can be difficult.  These are words we probably use every day. Here are some alternatives to help make the adjustment easier on your mind. Focus on the benefits! If there is something you think you should be doing more of or ought to be doing more of, remind yourself why you want to do this in the first place.  Accept reality. Once you do this you will realize you are capable of achieving your goals and will live a much happier life, without the SMOG.

Removing the SMOG from your vocabulary will take time and practice. Open up new possibilities with ‘can, could, choose to, am willing, have decided to (or not to), am considering’ and reap the rewards of a more empowered mindset.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also often known as the Tuen Ng or Duanwu Festival, is a traditional and statutory Holiday originating in China.  The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes.  Typically, these are boats paddled by a team of up to 20 paddlers with a drummer and steersman. The boats have a carved dragon as the head and tail of the boat.

Unconscious Mind

You’ve probably heard of the analogy where your unconscious mind is compared to an iceberg, with 90% of it submerged under the surface. The unconscious mind records everything you’ve ever thought or felt. So if it’s filled with destructive thoughts and feelings, your life could be the Titanic, just waiting to be sunk.  In the age of the Titanic though there were no helicopters that could lift you out of the wreckage. Today there is.

The brain is very powerful – you’d be surprised by how much control it has over us. Anyone who has ever felt anxious or depressed can confirm this. Unconscious thoughts that we’re not even aware of play a big role in our daily lives, impacting the choices that we make. Yet your unconscious mind has some interesting traits and by getting it to work with you instead of against you, you will be able to achieve much more out of life.

The unconscious mind will keep you on the straight and narrow path as long as you give it the right directions. In one of my previous blogs we discussed how the unconscious mind can’t process negatives like “don’t” or “can’t”. Negative thoughts come straight from your conscious mind and since you created it, you are the only one that can change it, and we all have the power to do so.

The power of positive thinking! Once you recognize there is a negative thought coming your way, acknowledge it and stop it in its tracks before it can affect your mood. Then replace it with a positive thought. If you keep up with this one simple task soon it will become habitual, and your unconscious mind will be able to relax and reprogram. Imagine that helicopter being full of positive thoughts, poised to save you from the destructive feelings that have been trying to drag you under.

You can achieve your goals. You can live the life you want. You can get exactly what you want, and it can be done in a less stressful and much happier way when the unconscious mind is on your side rooting for you!

DON’T Read This if You Want to Change

Did you know that the unconscious mind doesn’t recognize the word ‘don’t’? Every time you use it, your mind will skip it and go straight to the rest of your sentence. So when you say to your kids ‘Don’t run, you’ll fall over’, you’re actually giving them a command to run and fall, which makes it much more likely to happen. It might be more constructive to say ‘Run on the grass’ or ‘Watch where you’re going when you run.’ Think of the UK’s Drink Drive campaign ‘Don’t Drink and Drive.’ Surely it would make more sense to say ‘Stay Sober, Arrive Safe’?

Since your unconscious mind doesn’t process a negative, it’s important to be clear with the words you use, whether speaking to yourself or someone else. Instead of telling yourself what not to do, focus more on what to do. Think of new ways to phrase things by removing the negatives. I can’t think how many times I’ve been nervous in the past and repeatedly said to myself ‘Don’t mess this up’ then watched, horrified, as I did exactly that! If I’d known what I know now and concentrated instead on what I did want to happen, the result is likely to have been very different.

Making the transition to positive language and rephrasing how you speak to yourself and others will not only help your unconscious mind, but also your conscious mind! You’ll start thinking – and acting – more effectively. Where the head goes, your body follows.

There is no ‘Try’

How many of us are guilty of saying, “I’ll try?” I think we’ve all said this at one time or another. Now while the word ‘try’ is not completely negative like the words ‘no’ or ‘can’t’, saying you’ll try to do something is like setting yourself up for failure. You’re telling yourself that either you don’t believe in something or that you’re not committed to it. It’s a halfway attempt.

Trying gives you an easy way out. How far can you get if your mindset is to TRY to be successful? The great Yoda said it best, “Do or don’t. There is no try.” Don’t try to succeed, demand success! Don’t say you’re trying to be healthy, say I AM being healthy. Eliminating the word try from these statements has made them more like an affirmation – you’ve turned them into a positive and there’s no wiggle room for failure.

I demonstrate this with my coaching clients by asking them to try and pick up a book. They usually hesitate and then go ahead and pick up the book. When I shake my head they look confused. ‘I didn’t actually ask you to pick up the book, I asked you to try and pick up the book.’ Impossible isn’t it? Then the penny drops and they usually smile (or throw the book at me :)). I give them full permission to pull me up on ‘trying’ too, because it’s something I’m continually working on.

As small as this word may be, it is quite powerful. Removing it from your vocabulary will be like a breath of fresh air. You will be surprised how much more living you do in your life, when there is no other option then to just DO or NOT DO. This can work wonders in your professional and personal life, because we all have the innate power to attract anything we desire.

Once upon a crime…

Mind Body Spirit Wellbeing Festival 2014

Have you ever noticed how excited your mind gets when it’s making up stories?

So far my morning routine has yielded a handful of potentially good monologues:-

1. A ghost story. Why Daisy dog seems to like nothing barking at nothing at all. Obviously my kitchen is haunted.
2. A whodunit. How on earth did a plastic finger end up in my washing machine? (Still no clues)
3. A new invention. Solve the local litter problem by making Coke cans super-sticky. That way they can’t get thrown in hedges unless the culprit is prepared to draw attention to themselves by doing some weird hand-shaking dance along the pavement.

Our minds are so creative 🙂

How often do you use your intuition?

I love my satnav. It’s not even a very fancy one and the navigator’s voice, if I’m honest, drives me up the wall (not literally). But whenever I need to take a trip, I depend entirely on Julia or Sean to get me there. If it broke, I’d be lost (literally this time).

This blind faith in technology has gotten me into hot water waaay too often. Once I ended up in a field full of sheep instead of the promised luxury hotel. The sheep were as surprised as I was. Another time it took me 2 hours to get off the M25 near London because the exit disappeared.

It occurred to me the other day that if my feminine intuition was a satellite navigation device, it would probably only be switched on half the time!
